Art Inspiration: New Beginnings

What do you plan on beginning this year? 
AND what will you stop doing to make room for the new?  


My mom made this when she was ten and I think that it is still true!

For me this week between Christmas and New Year's is a time of transition.  This is when I plan out my year. 

Tis the season to make Vision Boards!


I've cut out a few thousand images for this year's Vision Board workshops.



I find that using images and picking a word of the year helps me articulate my internal dreams.

Art Inspiration: Helping Hands

 

Hello My Fellow Art Lovers-

Every day I am thankful for my hands.  Last year my joints swelled up making it difficult to use them because of a bad medication and autoimmune problems.  On the worst day I couldn't open a door.  



Hands are a powerful symbol because they represent our ability to make things happen. 

Some of the first paintings we have on record were of hands. This cave art in Indonesia is 40,000 years old.


Hands now inspire me.  I notice people's hands.  The lines and twists tell the story of what a person has accomplished in their life.

I filled my journals with images of hands....

And I filled the studio with hands.... 


In the coming year my hands will build, paint, cook and garden.

Art Inspiration: The Knights of the Round Table

 "As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others."

According to an old British legend, King Arthur created a round table to seat his knights.  Arthur wanted for all of his knights to know that they were all equaly important to him.  The act of creating the table was a symbolic reminder of how they wanted for their community to be structured without heirarchy.


Inspired by this idea I painted a table that now sits at the center of Studio Alchemy

For me this table symbolically represents how our art community here welcomes everyone as equals.  Each person has something important to say through the symbolic language of their artwork.  


I had members of our art community trace their handprints onto the table.


Next I asked them what their favorite symbols were.  I painted those symbols into the center of their handprints.

Now we have a centerpiece for our community that we can enjoy when we gather together for years to come!
